What's The iPhone Augmented Reality?

Augmented reality first appeared over 50 years ago, more recently it looked in high-tech conflict gear for soldiers. However, now with the flexible iPhone, there is a growing number of applications and games which overlay a digital world in addition to the real world.

However, what is augmented reality, what are it's applications, and why is it suddenly such a huge thing?

To begin with augmented reality actually is as straightforward as displaying digital objects or information in addition to a real-world view. This isn't particularly new, a simple example is of the information shown 'on the field' during a football game.

This is a superb illustration of how computer-generated information could be overlaid on a real-world situation to provide highly relevant information in an observable but non-obtrusive manner.

It has military applications, for instance having the location of enemies on 'battle goggles', and entertainment programs, such as alien invasions happening over your own cityscape.

More practical applications exist nevertheless, and augmented reality may be used in tour guides, to let you know about the stars, or even help tell you about specific objects through easy object recognition.

The uses of augmented reality are only just beginning to appear in day-to-day life. However as object recognition becomes more and more intelligent, it's highly possible that games will change the existing world, rather than just overlay new images on top of it. Instead of having static images and information overlaid on the actual world, there may be programs that appear which change the present landscape. These could turn your current skyline into a futuristic landscape with buildings changed to incorporate modern stylings into current structures rather than just incorporating futuristic objects.

Augmented Reality has become a massive deal over the last year for one simple reason. Apple created an upgrade which allowed third-party programs to use the iPhone camera for a video camera. This new medium suddenly gave creative application programmers a structure where they can combine reality with virtual reality. It has spawned a new generation of iPhone games, but on top of that, it has established the possibility for a totally new type of sport and application style. From this new technology, there is a strong probability that even more imaginative uses will be found for combining the real and virtual world.

As the years go by I foresee augmented reality getting a more integral element of daily life, however until that time comes I will delight in the augmented iPhone games, which can be basically what'Pong' is to 'Call of Duty' today!
